One good photograph is worth more than five average ones. Here's what makes one good:

• Outdoors, on an overcast day — flat light shows the real colour of a coat

• At your animal's eye level; photos taken from standing height flatten the face

• Close enough that the eyes are sharp

• The original file from your camera roll, not one sent through a messaging app
